Gen Z is emerging as the least financially literate generation on record, a trend that is becoming increasingly alarming. As a former governor and an education leader, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges this generation faces in navigating financial responsibilities. This issue is not just an abstract concern; it manifests in the workforce where many young adults struggle with basic financial concepts.
The lack of financial literacy among recent college graduates is particularly concerning. Many of my own children, who have just completed their degrees, are grappling with student loans, budgeting, and understanding credit. It is evident that educational institutions have not equipped them with the necessary skills to manage their finances effectively.
This gap in knowledge can lead to significant long-term consequences, including poor financial decisions and increased debt. As we move forward, it is crucial to prioritize financial education in schools and communities to better prepare the next generation for the financial realities they will face.
